Party in Denmark

December 14, 2009 Leave a comment

SO, the circus that is the UN climate meeting in Copenhagen goes on another day. People walk out (the so called ‘G77-China’ – developing country delegates), and people walk back in (same group). As always, the Big Players (developed countries) are trying to dictate the show, suggesting a whole new post-Kyoto treaty is necessary. Others disagree.

This report has details of the proceedings so far (the end of day 1). Another 4 days of this and the carpets will be worn to shreds.

Of course there are a range of complex issues here, not least that developing countries contribute very little to factors causing climate change. Many wish – even if for a short time – for an industrial infrastructure that does, to develop economies more on a par with those in Europe and North America. China is, as always, the anomaly. A massively coal-burning nation, the country also desires to lead the world in developing green energy. Let’s hope they stick to this goal – otherwise the rapid growth in this eastern economy is likely to offset many of the benefits (if any) coming from this week’s negotiations.

Many words will be said, shared and shouted this week, via increasingly fatigued translating teams. At least the issue of climate change is being addressed, but whether or not our grandchildren survive to reap any benefit hinges on the success or failure of agreements reached three days from now.
